Superman Reboot Confirmed

Superman Reboot Confirmed

Jeff Robinov confirmed to the Wall Street Journal, that Warner Bros will reboot the Superman franchise.

“Superman [Returns] didn’t quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to,” said Robinov. “It didn’t position the character the way he needed to be positioned. Had Superman worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009. But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all.”

No word on if Bryan Singer will still be involved or not. Lets just hope George Miller isn’t involved.

Warner Bros will begin to refocus on bigger tentpole movies, hoping to release as many as eight big movies a year by 2011. Robinov hopes that two out of those eight films will be DC comic book adaptations. This basically mimics the move made by Marvel Studios. Warner Bros is expected to announce their upcoming line-up of DC movies in the next month. But for now the plan is to produce four comic book films in the next three years. This would likely include a third Batman film and the Superman reboot. The success of The Dark Knight has convinced Robinov thatt building more realistic superheroes with darker stories may be the key to box office gold.

“We’re going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it,” he said.

This is a good move for some films, but I hope they take the time to assess each comic property on its own. I can certainly see a darker Superman. One of the many lessons learned from Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns is that the audiences want something different. I feel that his fan-boy like faithfulness to the Richard Donner films prevented the series from creating it’s own identity.

I suggested in my last post the possibility of hiring Jonathan Nolan to give a new spin on the character. Most comments were critical of this idea, but I still think it’s the best way to go. Superman doesn’t need to be set in the Nolanverse, but he needs a new take, and a screenwriter who will treat the character with respect, but at the same time won’t feel afraid to stray from the source material or ideas set up in the previous film adaptations. I think it might also be fun to eventually create one-off films, possibly something like Mark Millar’s Red Son.

Superman shouldn't be dark, but the villian however, should be. I vote for Doomsday or Darksied. Hell, why not both? I liked Superman returns and I think theres no need for a reboot. They can have a battle scene between Doomsday and Superman where Lois and his son gets killed. Now thats dark. LMAO!!!

I reckon Superman just needs a better, stronger, differenet villian...It's time to retire Lex Luthor..He's basically been in every Superman movie..What about Doomsday, or Brainiac...??

Supes doesn't have to be, and shouldn't be dark. It shouldn't be light-hearted either, though.

Just make it a good story about a man fighting the never ending battle against evil.

Basically, Superman is just a regular guy, raised by a regular, good couple to be fair, honest, and to always do the right thing.

He's what we as individuals should strive to be like.

    It's that simple.

The problem with that is, that people don't want to be like that anymore. They want to be The Punisher, or Wolverine, which is pretty lame because those are really bad guys. People want to be bad.

The other people want to be Batman. Good at his core, but riding the line between good and bad to get justice.

Don't change Superman. He's the ultimate good guy, and he never gives up. He is hope and kindness personified.

I don't know about the whole "dark" scheme, but I was very happy to hear that Warner Bros. had confirmed a reboot of the film franchise. Hell, that's what "Superman Returns" should have been in the first place, but no, they had to tie themselves to the outdated 1970s version.

The fact is, I'm a big Superman fan, and I believe that the daddy of all superheroes deserves a fresh, modern, successful film franchise. So three cheers!

Batman going dark is the right way, Superman going dark is the worng way! If anything superman returns needed to be a more lighthearted and less about the Lois Lane romance! The film needed a brighter city, a nicer superman (I didn't have a problem with Routh but his potrayal was a wimpy character!) along with a new villain (preferably visually strange like the joker, also very strong so there could be a huge battle at the end!). However, this new Shazam film could be taking the market superman wants, I can't wait for that movie!

I agree with the first comment. ever since the success of TDK, dark material should be involve in superhero movies? really should it? ok, batman dark element was good, but trust me this.. after 2 -3 movies, the writer should crack their head and give us some other thing!
    go dark? WTF!!!!!

and i agree with reboot session, i hate Superman Returns it is like an insult to Superman fans! as i always suggest change the main character, dont let Brandon Routh go any where near superman costume again! :P
